Roky Erickson/Okkervil River album

ODJ said "We know the album's finished via OR's twitter page, but Will's given no hint at it's release, and he's recently been moonlighting with Norah Jones?"

Yeah, I was pretty shocked when I read about Will writing with Norah Jones, and I am extremely curious about the results. I have lovingly referred to her as "Snora" Jones for years, but recently actually began to sort of like her (or at least not automatically lunging to change the station when I hear her on the radio).

I hope the record goes multi-platinum, and I hope Will makes boatloads of money because lord knows he deserves it. I hope this help keeps him and Okkervil afloat...

I was also pleasantly surprised to hear Norah Jones will be working with Will Sheff. It seems like a strange combination but I know it'll sound wonderfully.

NPR is streaming the new Norah Jones album

If Amazon is to be believed, Will co-wrote the song "Stuck". Correct away if my information is inaccurate

Obviously a question of taste, but I disagree. Although I haven't heard much Norah Jones (except at the supermarket or dentist) this is much better than anything I have ever heard by her. I like the melody and they lyrics. Clearly not a desert island song, but I will give her credit.

Anyway, we should all buy "Stuck" on itunes if only to support Will.

http://pitchfork.com/news/37545-okkervi ... new-album/

Fourteen years after his last album of original material, psych-rock legend and onetime 13th Floor Elevators frontman Roky Erickson is readying a new record called True Love Cast Out All Evil, out April 20 via Anti-. And he got some top-shelf help to bring his songs to life: fellow Austinites Okkervil River back Erickson on the whole LP, and Okkervil frontman Will Sheff produces.

and

Talking about the record in a press release, Sheff said, "When we started out, I was given sixty unreleased songs to choose from. There were songs written during business setbacks including the Elevators' painful breakup, songs written by Roky while he was incarcerated at Rusk, and a great deal of songs that reminded me of the sense of optimism and romanticism that I think sustained Roky through his worst years and ultimately reunited him, a few years ago, with his son Jegar and his first wife Dana."

Just found this article from Filter magazine website regarding first impressions of the new Roky Erickson album with Okkervil River.

http://filtermagazine.com/index.php/news/entry/first_impressions_roky_erickson_with_okkervil_river#extended

"Okkervil River’s instrumentation does Erickson’s songs justice. They provide the backbone for the album."

and

"Roky Erickson’s first new album in 14 years will not disappoint. Okkervil River proved to be a more than worthy backing band. Much like how Time Out of Mind reinvigorated Bob Dylan’s career, expect this album to give Erickson a new audience with whom to share his music"

The album sounds pretty good! :)

I was able to use my familial connection to get a sneak listen and this album is tremendous. Lots of depth and texture as well as the cinematic scope we've grown to expect. This is one of those albums that intrigues you when you first listen and then grows with each subsequent spin. I really think this will please both sides of the house. To me the biggest surprise may have been how well Roky's voice holds up. He really carries the CD and I think he's going to get a slew of new fans, as will OR. I can't wait for April so that I can start spreading the word. The shows should be interesting too.

They're playing a few shows this spring:

I suppose Roky isn't up for a full tour, so I feel a little petty for being annoyed at the lack of a concert within 1000 miles of me.

Does everyone follow OR on Facebook? Is it worth it to repost stuff here?

I'm seeing some really positive buzz for the album on the Internet. Rolling Stone gave them high marks for their SXSW show and they're even mentioned in Esquire magazine!

"Be and Bring Me Home," Roky Erickson with Okkervil River

Because this line: "Suddenly my fireplace is friendly. / Bringin' me home." Considering all that Erickson has been through — as chronicled in the 2005 documentary You're Gonna Miss Me — these words, originally written by Erickson in the seventies, are somehow even more poignant. The whole album, backed by Austin folk band Okkervil River, is stunning, but this song is its emotional centerpiece.

I picked up a copy of "TLCOAE" on vinyl for Record Store Day, and spent all Sunday morning feeling mopey and listening to it. It's certainly something to digest all at once; I can't imagine any song singularly ending on up a mix or anything.

So, what do you think? Is the album destined to go down as an Interesting Historical Document or is it a vibrant new release in its own right?

I figured I may as well post this here as it's kind of relevant. In celebration of the release of the new album, we uploaded some Roky/Okkervil videos and audio over on downtheoubliette. http://www.downtheoubliette.com/news/news.html will tell you what's new.
there's no such thing as rock stars they're just people who play music, and some of them are just like us and some of them are dicks

Sold Extra Ticket for Sale - April 24th Paramount show in Au

Postby suzanne78704 on Wed Apr 21, 2010 2:30 pm

Thanks, Heather, for your hard work and the heads-up!

I have an extra ticket for $35.00 to the April 24th Roky/Okkervil show at the Paramount in Austin. It's on the floor (orchestra?), middle section, about midway back from the stage (I don't have the specifics with me presently.)

PM or email me @ suzanne78704@gmail.com if you are interested in purchasing. Should be a rockin' good time...

Thanks,

Suz

Edit: Ticket has been sold! Yay, I'm so excited about the Paramount show after seeing them Thursday night, which was a fantastic performance to be broadcast on KUT sometime...I'll give a full review after Saturday night's show...
